Safe Sleep Regulations: The Safe Sleep Regulations were approved by the Office of Administrative Law and effective as of August 19, 2020. We had submitted many comments during the comment period. Amendments were made that will allow assistants to help meet new requirements. We were not successful in persuading the Department of Social Services to limit 15 minute sleep inspections to children under one year of age. On January 23, the Learning Policy Institute released Building an Early Learning System that Works: Next Steps for California. This new report complements the Learning Policy Institute’s earlier report on early care and education (ECE), Understanding California’s Early Care and Education System, which provides a comprehensive overview of the state’s ECE system. The earlier report found that California’s ECE system is complex and fragmented, and fails to provide hundreds of thousands of children with the quality early learning experiences they need.

Across the nation, many family child care educators are participating in a Quality Rating Improvement System (QRIS). In response, our CFCCN leaders are meeting with other family child care leaders by conference call to support a more family child care friendly QRIS in California.
